Nottingham's Tree Population: A Rich Tapestry of Green.

Nottingham, a city celebrated for its verdant landscapes and historical roots, boasts a remarkable tree population that is as diverse as it is abundant.

Nottingham's urban forest is a sight to behold, with a canopy cover that is not just extensive but also integral to the city's charm. Recent studies reveal that Nottingham enjoys a canopy cover of approximately 16%, a figure that stands testament to the city's commitment to green spaces. This urban canopy cover is in line with the national average tree canopy cover and Nottingham City Council are committing to increasing the urban forests canopy cover from its current level to 20% by 2030.

THE LIVING LEGENDS

The city's tree population is steeped in history, with several ancient specimens dotting the landscape.

Among these, the legendary Major Oak in Sherwood Forest stands out. Estimated to be around 800 to 1000 years old, this venerable oak is shrouded in the myths of Robin Hood and continues to be a symbol of Nottingham's rich past.

Beyond their unique and irreplaceable ecological value, these historic trees are also cultural landmarks, drawing visitors from across the world and adding a unique character to the city's environment.

From the stately English Elms in the Arboretum to the Horse Chestnuts lining the avenues of University Park, these trees are living narratives of the city's evolution. They stand as silent witnesses to Nottingham's development, from its medieval roots to its current status as a bustling urban centre.

BS5837 Tree Surveys in Nottingham.

Do You Need a Tree Survey for a Planning Application?

The answer is more than likely yes. A tree survey is crucial for planning applications, especially to meet local planning authority requirements.

Understanding the pace of development in Nottingham, we offer efficient, technology-driven processes for timely and accurate BS5837 surveys. Our commitment to precision and efficiency ensures your project stays on track, respecting both Nottingham's unique arboricultural landscape and your schedule.

Stage 1 - Feasibility and Pre-Design
Stage 2 - Assessment of Impacts
Stage 3 - Tree Protection Detail
Stage 4 - Construction Commences

For planning applications in Nottingham involving trees on or near your site, BS5837 tree surveys and a precise tree constraints plan isn't just an option – it is an essential requirement for successfully integrating trees into your development. Stage 1 is almost always required.

At the core of successful planning validation is the Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA). The AIA outlines potential impacts to trees and how to mitigate them. Without an Impact Assessment, your planning application submitted to Nottingham City Council or one of the many Burrough Councils could be refused.

Once your Planning Application is approved, an Arboricultural Method Statement acts as your guiding manual. This vital document is often requested as a Condition to Planning Approval and is shared with the Local Authority and Site Manager, providing a methodology for arboricultural operations on Site.

As your development progresses, our support continues. We can act as Arboricultural Clerk of Works for Sites across Nottinghamshire providing on-site advice, liaising with all parties, managing tree works, and ensuring the seamless installation of tree protection measures.

Do I need a tree survey for planning permission?

In almost all cases for a proposed development where trees are present on, or near the Site, for projects across Nottingham, you will need to submit a tree survey to BS5837 and an arboricultural statement or Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA).

We pride ourselves on our accuracy and efficiency, ensuring your BS5837 Tree Survey and AIA exceed planning validation requirements, giving you a greater chance of a successful planning application. Importantly, we also ensure that  Nottinghamshire's local planning authorities have peace of mind that trees have been appropriately considered.

We also understand the importance of time and budget constraints on your project. Our efficient processes and use of innovative technologies deliver swift, cost-effective solutions without compromising on quality.

The level of detail you can expect.

Once you’ve accepted our free quote we will arrange a mutually convenient date for your tree survey. Our professional tree surveyors will come to your Site in Nottinghamshire and collect the data and information we need to produce your tree report, promptly.

All of our tree surveyors are qualified and insured drone pilots and we will typically obtain high-resolution aerial imagery and video footage of your Site, at no additional cost to you.

You may be wondering why this is necessary for a tree survey? For BS5837 Tree Surveys for Planning, aerial imagery can be the difference between planning success or refusal.

For tree risk surveys, the use of a drone can often reduce the need for further surveys, including climbing assessments, and helps us to make better, more-informed decisions on the likelihood of failure, risk rating, and future tree management.
