What's the Difference Between An Arboricultural Consultant and Tree Consultant?

There is absolutely no difference between an Arboricultural Consultant and a Tree Consultant, these are two interchangeable terms used for the same professional role (erm... with that sorted, you're probably wondering if there is much point reading the rest of this blog).

Bold typeface urging people to read the rest of the blog despite answering the initial question.

In the realm of arboriculture, the terms "Arboricultural Consultant" and "Tree Consultant" often sprout up, seemingly pointing towards different professions. Yet, in reality, they are two branches of the same tree.

What Does a Tree Consultant Do?

A Tree (or Arboricultural) Consultant embodies the role of guardian of our urban forests, as someone who has gained recognised qualifications and expertise in the care and management of trees. Their work spans a comprehensive range of services, from conducting detailed Tree Surveys, and providing advice on tree risk, condition and future management, to developing management plans for the preservation and planting of trees.

They are the experts called upon to complete a BS5837 Tree Survey for Planning when the health, safety, and management of trees intersect with the a new development and enjoyment of landscapes and urban spaces.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting Tree Surveys: Assessing the health, condition, and risk of trees, quantifying potential risks and offering recommendations on mitigation, tree management or long-term solutions.

  • Disease Management: Diagnosing tree diseases and pests, and recommending treatments to preserve tree health.

  • Planning and Development Advice: Guiding developers, homeowners, and local authorities on tree retention during construction activities.

  • Tree Valuation and Preservation: Evaluating the value of trees (using systems like CAVAT) in a landscape and devising strategies for their protection and care.

Who is Qualified to Do a Tree Survey?

The field of tree consultancy is rooted in a deep understanding of arboriculture, requiring not just a passion for trees but recognised qualifications and expertise. Essentially, they should be a "competent", able to demonstrate a good understanding of trees, their form, function and biomechanics, along with interactions with fungi, pests and diseases.

The Interchangeable Terms of Arboricultural Consultant and Tree Consultant

When we peel back the layers, the distinction between an Arboricultural Consultant and a Tree Consultant fades away. Both terms describe a professional vocation focused on the care, management, and study of trees in urban and populated settings.
